how it works

Why MIDI files sound different everywhere.

A MIDI file has no sound in it

It only stores the notes and which instrument should play them, like sheet music. Whatever plays the file supplies the sounds, so the same song sounds different on every computer, phone and game.

A SoundFont supplies the instruments

A SoundFont (.sf2) is a bank of recorded instruments. General MIDI SoundFonts have the 128 standard instruments and a drum kit in the order MIDI files expect, so any song plays with the right sounds.

faq

Common questions.

How do I play a MIDI file online?

Choose a .mid file above or drop it on the box. It starts playing as soon as the sounds have loaded. Drag along the notes to jump to any point in the song.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The MIDI file and any SoundFont you add are read and played in your browser. Only the GeneralUser GS SoundFont is downloaded, once, from this site.

Which files work?

Standard MIDI files (.mid and .midi, types 0, 1 and 2), karaoke .kar files and RIFF .rmi files. Your own SoundFont must be an .sf2 file. SF3 and SFZ files don't load here, but simpleSF2 plays SFZ in your DAW.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, on iPhone, iPad and Android. The first play downloads 31 MB of sounds, so Wi-Fi helps. On an iPhone, if you hear nothing, check the volume and the silent switch.

Why does it sound different from Windows?

Windows plays MIDI through its small built-in Microsoft GS Wavetable synth. GeneralUser GS has fuller, more modern sounds. For the old Windows or Sound Canvas sound, load a SoundFont made to copy it.

Can I use these sounds in my own music?

Yes. simpleSF2 is a free plugin that plays any SoundFont in your DAW, and GeneralUser GS is free to use in your music. Read how to open an SF2 file to get started.
