faq

MIDI to WAV questions.

Why does a MIDI file need a SoundFont?

A MIDI file holds notes, not sound. It says which instrument plays which note and when, and whatever plays it supplies the sounds. That's why the same MIDI sounds different on every computer. A SoundFont is a bank of sampled instruments, and this tool plays the MIDI through one to make the audio.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The MIDI file and any SoundFont you pick are read in your browser, the audio is made there, and the WAV is saved straight from it. Nothing is sent to a server.

Can I turn an SF2 into a WAV?

An SF2 is a set of instruments, so it needs notes to play. Add it in step 2 with a MIDI file, and the WAV is the song played with your SF2's sounds. To record single notes or your own playing, load the SF2 in simpleSF2 in your DAW and bounce the track.

Which MIDI files work?

Standard MIDI files (.mid and .midi), type 0 and type 1, including karaoke .kar files. Drums play on channel 10, as in General MIDI. Each channel's program changes, volume, pan, pitch bend and sustain pedal are played.

Can I get an MP3 instead?

Yes. Pick MP3 next to the Convert button. It also makes FLAC and AIFF. WAV and FLAC keep the full quality; MP3 at 320 kbps is close and much smaller, which suits sharing.

Why does it sound different from my MIDI player?

Each player uses its own sounds. Windows plays MIDI with the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, and older games used a Sound Blaster or a Roland Sound Canvas. Try a SoundFont made to match the sound you remember.
